мастор

Erzya

Etymology

From Proto-Mordvinic *mastər. At least the first component is from Proto-Uralic *mëxe. Proper names (toponyms like Арзамас (Eŕźamas[1]) and personal names Инемас, Келемас) point on existing of the shortened form -мас.

The second component -стор (-stor) possibly borrowed from a descendant of Proto-Indo-European *sterh₃- (to stretch) (compare Proto-Slavic *stornà (side; land), *prostorъ (space, expanse)).
