Old Church Slavonic

Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Slavic *lěnostь. By surface analysis, лѣнъ (lěnŭ) + ость (ostĭ).

Noun

  1. laziness
    • from the Homily against the Bogumils, 192-196:
нъ чьто глаголѭтъ еретици мꙑ паче васъ бога молимъ и бъдимъ и молимъ сѧ а не живемъ въ лѣности ꙗкоже и вꙑ
nŭ čĭto glagoljǫtŭ eretici my pače vasŭ boga molimŭ i bŭdimŭ i molimŭ sę a ne živemŭ vŭ lěnosti jakože i vy
What do the heretics say? ‘We pray to God more than you do, we keep vigils and prayers, we do not live in laziness as you do.’
