From Proto-Mordvinic *lokśťəj~*lokśťəŋ, inherited from Proto-Finno-Ugric *joŋkće. Cognates include Moksha локсти (loksťi), Finnish joutsen, Northern Sami njukča, Eastern Mari йӱксӧ (jüksö), Komi-Permyak юсь (juś).
