Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Turkic *kȫkel (“drake”), equivalent to кӑвак (kăvak, “blue, grey”) + -ал (-al).[1][2] Yegorov also suggested it may be from an onomatopoeia ква-ква (kva-kva),[3] however this is considered incorrect by Eren and Fedotov.

Cognate with Turkish gövel (“green headed (of ducks)”) and Bashkir күгәл (kügəl, “drake”).
