кукурудза
Ukrainian
Etymology
The origin is unclear. Possibly from Proto-Slavic *kukur-, *kokor-, which is related to Slovene kukúrjav (“curly”) and Bulgarian кукуряк (kukurjak, “hellebore”).
It can also be borrowed from Romanian cucuruz, which itself was borrowed from Ukrainian кокорудка (kokorudka, “cone, strobilus”).
