країна 404

Ukrainian

Etymology

From Ukrainian краї́на (krajína, country) and 404 (an online error) (краї́на чоти́риста чоти́ри), suggesting that Russia is an illegitimate state. Based on страна́ 404 (straná 404), which had been used by nationalist Russian users to mock Ukraine.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): [krɐˈjinɐ t͡ʃɔˈtɪrestɐ t͡ʃɔˈtɪre]

Noun

краї́на 404 • (krajína 404) f inan (genitive краї́ни 404, nominative plural краї́ни 404, genitive plural краї́н 404)

  1. (derogatory, slang, neologism) Russia.

Usage notes

This term was coined by Ukrainians in reference to a derisive Russian term for Ukraine, страна́ 404 (straná 404, country 404, Ukraine as a non-existent country).

After the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, Ukrainian online users used it back towards Russia, referencing international sanctions against and criminal investigations of Russia, the international arrest warrant for its president, and its worsened reputation.
