From *qapčïq (small sack), a diminutive form from Proto-Turkic *kāp (sack).

Cognate with Kazakh қапшық (qapşyq, small sack), Karachay-Balkar къапчыкъ (qapçıq), Kumyk къапчыкъ (qapçıq), Kyrgyz капчык (kapcık, small sack), Uzbek qopchiq (small sack), Uyghur قاپچۇق (qapchuq, small sack), Khakas хапчых (xapçıx, small sack; purse).
