Etymology
From *qaydan "from where", from Proto-Turkic *ka- (“interrogative particle”). -даҥ (-daŋ) is an ablative case formant.
Cognate with Bashkir ҡайҙан (qayðan), Tatar кайдан (qaydan), Kyrgyz кайдан (kaydan), Kazakh қайдан (qaidan), Siberian Tatar ҡайтан (qaytan), Karaim kaydan, Kumyk къайдан (qaydan), Northern Altai кайданъ (kaydanʺ), Shor қайдаң (qaydaŋ), Khakas хайдаң (xaydañ), etc.
