From Proto-Khanty *jiŋk, from Proto-Uralic *jäŋe. Cognates include Northern Khanty йиӈк (jiṇk), Northern Mansi я̄ӈк (â̄ňk, “ice”), Hungarian jég (“ice”) and Finnish jää (“ice”).
