From *erkin (“free; spacious”), derived from Proto-Turkic *erik (“strength, might, will, power”).
Cognate with Old Uyghur [script needed] (irkin, “a nobility title”);[1] Kumyk эркин (erkin, “free”), Kazakh еркін (erkın, “free”), Southern Altai эркин (erkin, “freedom, liberty”), etc.
