Inherited from Old Ruthenian жнецъ (žnecʹ) (genitive женца (ženca)), from Old East Slavic жьньць (žĭnĭcĭ). Cognate with Belarusian жнец (žnjec), Polish żeniec, Russian жнец (žnec).
