From Common Turkic *yemiš (“fruit”), from Proto-Turkic *yẹ̄miĺč (“fruit”).
Cognate with Old Uyghur [script needed] (jemiš, “fruit”); Tatar җимеш (cimeş), Bashkir емеш (yemeş) Southern Altai јемиш (ǰemiš), Kazakh жеміс (jemıs), Khakas ниміс (nimìs), Azerbaijani, Crimean Tatar, Turkish yemiş, Chuvash ҫимӗҫ (śimĕś, “fruit”).
