Not found in Southern Mongolian, but compare Khamnigan Mongol jaala (“small”), Kalmyk җааль (jaalĭ, “newlyborn, child”).
Perhaps derived somehow from earlier *jia-, compare Buryat жаа (žaa, “small”) and жаахан (žaaxan, “little”)
