Inherited from Old East Slavic гыря (gyrja). Cognate with Ukrainian ги́ря (hýrja), Belarusian гіря (hirja). Vasmer connects it to the root of гвор (gvor, “bladder, tumor”), ultimately PIE *gʷreh₂- (“heavy”). The phonology is difficult and may show Iranian influence (Proto-Indo-Iranian *gr̥Húš, modern Persian گران (gerân, “heavy”)).
