Inherited from Old Church Slavonic въпрѣкꙑ (vŭprěky), univerbation of в (v) +‎ преки (preki). The later is a fossilized feminine plural accusative case of Bulgarian пряк (prjak, “direct”). Cognate with Russian вопреки́ (voprekí) (borrowed from the same Old Church Slavonic word).
