водоросль
Russian
Alternative forms
- во́дросль (vódroslʹ) — colloquial, nonstandard
- во́доросель (vódoroselʹ) — rare, folklore
Etymology
From вода́ (vodá) + -о- (-o-) + -росл (-rosl) + -ь (-ʹ), based on a difficult-to-explain combination with расти́ (rastí, “to grow”) (compare the past feminine singular росла́ (roslá)). A parallel construction occurs in ле́торосль (létoroslʹ, “sprout”), also found as ле́торость (létorostʹ), with cognates Old Church Slavonic лѣторасль (lětoraslĭ), Czech letorost, Polish latorośl.
Pronunciation
- IPA(key): [ˈvod(ə)rəs⁽ʲ⁾lʲ]
- IPA(key): [ˈvodərəsʲɪlʲ] (phonetic respelling: во́доросель)
