вероломный

Russian

Etymology

Possibly borrowed from Polish wiarołomny, itself possibly a calque of German treubrüchig. First attested in 1717.[1] By surface analysis, ве́ра (véra) + -о- (-o-) + ломи́ть (lomítʹ) + -ный (-nyj). Compare Ukrainian віроло́мний (virolómnyj), Belarusian верало́мны (vjeralómny), Bulgarian and Macedonian вероломен (verolomen).
