From Proto-Turkic *bürülgen (a type of a berry), perhaps from *bürü (“bud; berry”).
Cognate with Tatar бөрлегән (börlegän, “stone bramble”), Kazakh бүлдірген (büldırgen, “wild strawberry”), Kumyk бюрюлген (bürülgen, “blackberry”), Kyrgyz бүлдүркөн (büldürkön, “blackberry; stone bramble; wild strawberry”), Uyghur بولجۇرگەن (boljurgen, “strawberry; blackberry”), Azerbaijani böyürtkən (“blackberry”), Turkish böğürtlen (“blackberry”).
