Per Georgiev, from *блюд (*bljud) + -кав (-kav) ultimately from Bulgarian блю́вам (bljúvam), бъ́лвам (bǎ́lvam, to vomit). Cognate with Macedonian блуткав (blutkav) and related to dialectal Serbo-Croatian блу̀тав (spoiled, blight).
