First attested in 1859. бе́лый (bélyj, white) + -о- (-o-) + кровь (krovʹ, blood) + -ие (-ije), calque of New Latin leucaemia, from Ancient Greek λευκός (leukós, white) + αἷμα (haîma, blood).
