Inherited from Old Ruthenian *бчолꙗ́ръ (*bčoljár), from Old East Slavic *бьчелꙗрь (*bĭčeljarĭ), from Proto-Slavic *bьčeľařь. By surface analysis, бджола́ (bdžolá) + -я́р (-jár). Compare Belarusian пчаля́р (pčaljár), Bulgarian пчела́р (pčelár), Polish pszczelarz.
