Etymology
Evidently a third-person singular past II / subjunctive copulative (conjugated) form of the particle аф (af) (morphologically: аф (af) + -о- (-o-) + -ль (-ľ)), compare, for example, мораль (moraľ, “he/she/it would sing ~ would have sung”), see апак (apak) for suggested cognates.
