Derived via Western European languages from Latin atrophia, from Ancient Greek ἀτροφία (atrophía, “a wasting away”), from ἄτροφος (átrophos, “ill-fed, un-nourished”). Compare Russian атрофи́я (atrofíja), Belarusian атрафі́я (atrafíja), Polish atrofia.
