From *araqï (“vodka”), from Persian عَرَق ('araq, “alcoholic drink”), from Arabic عَرَق (ʕaraq, “raisin loquor”), from عَرَّقَ (ʕarraqa, “water down, dilute a drink”).
Cognate with Kumyk гьаракъы (haraqı, “vodka”), Karachay-Balkar аракъы (araqı, “vodka”), Southern Altai аракы (arakï, “vodka”), Khakas араға (arağa, “alcoholic drink”), Tuvan арага (araga, “vodka; wine”), Yakut арыгы (arıgı, “wine”).
