Ultimately from Latin allēgoria, from Ancient Greek ᾰ̓λληγορῐ́ᾱ (allēgoríā). An internationalism with numerous cognates, such as French allégorie, Spanish alegoría, Finnish allegoria, Russian аллего́рия (allegórija), and Serbo-Croatian alegorija. See allegoria for all other Latin descendants.
