Inherited from Byzantine Greek χαμόμηλον (khamómēlon), from Koine Greek χαμαίμηλον (khamaímēlon), from χαμαί (khamaí, on the ground) (> χάμ(ω) (chám(o)) + -ο- (-o-) > χαμό- (chamó-) + μῆλον (mêlon, fruit, apple).[1] Compare to χαμομήλι (chamomíli).
