Usually derived from Proto-Indo-European *dʰeh₁dʰ-. Others prefer to connect it with Proto-Slavic *dědъ (“grandfather”), Lithuanian dė̃dė, dė̃dis (“uncle”) and Latvian dȩ̀ds (“old man”).
