Learned borrowing from French cinéma, clipping of cinématographe,[1] a compound from Ancient Greek κίνημα (kínēma), stem κινηματο- (kinēmato-) + -γράφος (-gráphos) from γράφω (gráphō, “write”).[2] Doublet of κίνημα (kínima) and the vernacular masculine σινεμάς (sinemás).
