From Proto-Indo-European *(s)ptyew- (to spit, vomit). Akin to Latin spuō, Albanian pështyj, Old English spīwan (English spew), Old Armenian թուք (tʻukʻ), Old Church Slavonic пльвати (plĭvati), Sanskrit ष्ठीवति (ṣṭhīvati).
