Inherited from Byzantine Greek λεύτερος (leúteros), from forms ἐλεύτερος (eleúteros), λεύθερος (leútheros), from Ancient Greek ἐλεύθερος (eleútheros) with omission of unaccented first vowel /e/ and dissimilation of [fθ] > [ft].[1] Compare to ελεύθερος (eléftheros).
