From Ancient Greek κυδώνιον (kudṓnion), shortening of μηλοκυδώνιον (mēlokudṓnion, “quince”), ultimately from Κυδωνία (Kudōnía, “Cydonia”). See also Latin cotoneum and Italian cotogno.
