Etymology

Inchoative form of an assumed primary verb εὑρω (heurō) and assumed cognate εὑρέω (heuréō), which donated all the tense forms save the present and the imperfect. The root is unknown. Cognate with Old Irish ·fúar (preterite of fo·gaib (to find)) and possibly with Old Church Slavonic обрѣсти (obrěsti). Formed with inchoative suffix -σκω (-skō).
