Learned borrowing from Koine Greek δείκτης (deíktēs, who shows, poinst) and semantic loan from French indice, indicateur and German Anzeiger, Anzeige.
The sense "index finger" from Koine δεικτικός (deiktikós) by ellipsis of the noun δάκτυλος (dáktulos) ("the finger that poins").[1]
