First attested in 1856.[1] From απολιθώνω (apolithóno, “fossilize”) + -μα (-ma, “neuter suffix”). Morphologically from από (apó, “from”) + λίθος (líthos, “stone”) + -μα (-ma, “suffix”). For sense fossil, calque of French pétrification. For figurative senses, calque of French fossile.[2]
