From Koine Greek ἀπαίσιος (apaísios, ominous, sinister), from Ancient Greek ἀπό (apó, from) + αἴσιος (aísios, favourable), ultimately from the root of αἰτέω (aitéō, to ask for, beg) + -ιος (-ios). Compare αἶσα (aîsa, destiny, divine fate).
