Etymology

Learnedly, from Hellenistic Koine Greek ἀναγνώστης (anagnṓstēs, reader, usually a slave trained to read)[1] (1st century BC), from ἀνάγνωσ(ις) (anágnōs(is), recognition; reading, reading aloud) + -της (-tēs).[2]
The ecclesiastic term, since the mediaeval times.[3]
