Etymology
Learnedly, from Hellenistic Koine Greek ἀναγνώστης (anagnṓstēs, “reader, usually a slave trained to read”)[1] (1st century BC), from ἀνάγνωσ(ις) (anágnōs(is), “recognition; reading, reading aloud”) + -της (-tēs).[2]
The ecclesiastic term, since the mediaeval times.[3]
