The name of the city in Libya, formerly called Εὐεσπερίδες (Euesperídes) or Ἑσπερίς (Hesperís), originated when it was refounded following the marriage of Ptolemy III of the Ptolemaic Kingdom to Berenice II of Egypt, who was born in the region of Cyrenaica.
