Αἰαία

Ancient Greek

Etymology

Probably related to ἀετός (aetós) and Αἰήτης (Aiḗtēs). Thus from an unattested *Αιϝαία (*Aiwaía), from *αἴϝα (*aíwa, (related to) bird) + -ῐ́ᾱ (-íā, pertaining to, belonging to ("of")), the first from *h₂éwis (bird). Similar outcome of Ancient Greek Γαῖᾰ (Gaîa). Cognate with Sanskrit वि (), Latin avis, Old Armenian հաւ (haw).
