From Proto-Polynesian *kava-pusi (compare with Samoan 'avapuhi and Maori kōpī (Corynocarpus laevigatus))[1][2][3] from Proto-Polynesian *kawa. Doublet of ʻawa, ʻawaʻawa, and ʻōpuhi.
