Borrowed from New Latin ōsmosis, from Koine Greek ὠσμός (ōsmós, “push, thrust”), from a contracted form of Ancient Greek ὠθισμός (ōthismós), ὠστισμός (ōstismós), from ὠθίζω (ōthízō, “to push, to thrust”), from ὠθέω (ōthéō, “to push”).
