Probably from Vulgar Latin *intenebricāre (attested in Medieval Latin), from Latin tenebricus. The original form may have been *întenerica before being influenced phonetically by or confused with the probably unrelated but coincidentally similar întuneca. [1]

a întunereca (third-person singular present întunerecă, past participle întunerecat) 1st conj.
