From Middle High German amt, ambt, ambet, ambahte from Old High German ambaht, ambahti, from Proto-Germanic *ambahtiją (“service, ministry, office”), from *ambahtaz (“servant”), from Gaulish ambaxtos (“vassal”). Cognate with German Amt.
