Personal life
Saroop was born in Langkap, Perak, Malaysia on 25 March 1998. Her late father, Harbarjan Singh was a businessman, and her mother, Shinder Kaur is a nurse from Punjab, India. At the age of 11 years old, Saroop and her family relocated to Ipoh, Perak where she spent most of her teenage years. She later pursued her education at Methodist Girls' School Ipoh and continued her sixth form at ACS Ipoh. She has always been active in sports such as running, long jump, and netball. She has represented her state, Perak in Netball Competitions. Saroop is fluent in English, Bahasa Malaysia, Punjabi, and Hindi. Saroop moved by herself to Kuala Lumpur and started working for the family at the early age of 19, shortly after the passing of her father. She worked as a barista and fashion model and saved up her own funds to pursue her tertiary education in Bachelor of Psychology (HONS) at HELP University in Kuala Lumpur.
Based on her personal experience of battling with depressive symptoms after the passing of her father, she created an online suicide prevention organisation called “UnmaskYourself” in 2019 where she continues to create awareness and promote prevention and intervention efforts, especially in the prevention of suicide in Malaysia. She actively works with other mental health professionals, people with lived experiences, children, and teenagers from marginalised and vulnerable communities to continue her efforts.[7]
