Nazarethpettai is a village approximately 10 kilometers north of Chennai. It is the birthplace of the former Chief Minister of Madras Presidency and leader of the Indian National Congress Minjur Bhaktavatsalam. In Nazarathpet Shiva temple has a great history. Approximately 1000 years ago karkoda maharishi a sage got the shivaling in the holy river Ganges. He brought it to Nazarathpet and did pradishta. The meaning of karkoda is a snake. If you see under Nandhi's leg there will be a snake, there is no snake under the leg in any other temple. This is one of the greatest histories in Nazarathpet.
