Michal Wiezik (born 14 June 1979)[3] is a Slovak environmentalist and politician who was elected as a Member of the European Parliament in 2019.[4]
Early life and academic career
Wiezik was born on 14 June 1979 in Martin. Following education at the Viliam Paulíny Tóth grammar school in Martin, he studied environmental protection at the Technical University in Zvolen. Following his studies, he obtained PhD. at the same university and became a professor there.[5] In August 2023 he criticized the university for admitting a far right politician Miroslav Suja to its PhD program, in spite of no previous track record in the environmental studies.[6]
Political career
In addition to his committee assignments, Wiezik is part of the European Parliament Intergroup on Climate Change, Biodiversity and Sustainable Development[7] and the European Parliament Intergroup on Seas, Rivers, Islands and Coastal Areas.[8]
In late 2021, Wiezik left the European People's Party to join the Renew Europe group.[9]
In 2023 Slovak parliamentary election, Wiedzik won a mandate but opted to forfeit it and remain in the European Parliament.[10]
