The MG4 EV is a battery electric small family car (C-segment) produced by the Chinese automotive manufacturer SAIC Motor under the British MG marque. First released in June 2022 as the MG Mulan in China (later renamed to MG4 EV in August 2023),[6] it is the first vehicle to be based on SAIC's battery-electric Modular Scalable Platform (marketed as the Nebula platform in China). It was introduced in Europe in July 2022.[7]
Overview
Developed under the codename EH32,[1] the car was designed as a global model with the European market set as the primary target.[8]
The MG4 EV is claimed to have a 50:50 weight distribution and a low centre of gravity of 490 mm (19.3 in) for superior handling. MG also engineered a thinner and flatter battery compared to typical battery electric vehicles with its "One Pack" battery system (called Rubik's Cube battery system in China). The battery is only 110 mm (4.3 in) thick for the smallest capacity, which reduces the height of the car. The "One Pack" battery is also designed to be swappable.
The Modular Scalable Platform technically enables 800-volt charging technology, which allows the car to achieve a range of 200 km (124 mi) after five minutes of charging and reach 80 percent level within 15 minutes. For models equipped with the regular 400-volt charging technology, five minutes of charging will be enough to reach 100 km (62 mi) of range and take 30 minutes for charging to 80 percent level.[9]
The MG4 EV is also marketed in Thailand as the MG4 Electric since November 2022.[10] The MG4 EV was revealed in Indonesia in February 2023 at the 30th Indonesia International Motor Show,[11] and launched on 14 June 2023.[12] The MG4 EV was also launched in the Philippines on October 6, 2023 alongside the Marvel R.

In Australia the MG4 EV is sold in five variants with three grades of features and trim:[18]
- MG4 Excite 51 (50.8kWh usable / 51kWh gross)
- MG4 Excite 64 (62.1kWh usable / 64kWh gross)
- MG4 Essence 64 (62.1kWh usable / 64kWh gross)
- MG4 Long Range 77 (74.4kWh usable / 77kWh gross)
- MG4 XPower (62.1kWh usable / 64kWh gross)
The main versions are similar in specification across each area but although minor differences do exist, the variants are generally based on a 50.8kWh usable (51kWh gross) LFP battery, a 62.1kWh usable (64kWh gross) NMC battery, and a 74.4kWh usable (77kWh) long range NMC battery.
The versions are broken into three levels of features and trim. The standard Excite grades have rear wheel drive, some driver assistance safety features, cloth seats that are manually adjustable. The high-spec Essence grade gains additional rear radar-based safety assist features, 360-degree camera, more speakers, a Qi wireless phone charging pad, heated seats and steering wheel, and PU leather/cloth seats with electric adjustment.[19] The XPower grade has all-wheel-drive, with unique alloys, painted brake caliper covers, contrasting silver accents, and suede interior finish. The grades have access to six exterior paint colours: Dover White, Camden Grey, Black Pearl, Brixton Blue, Volcano Orange, Diamond Red, and Sterling Silver. The XPower variant has an exclusive Hunter Green matte paint option.
XPower
A dual-motor, all-wheel-drive, performance-oriented model of the MG4 EV called XPOWER has been available since July 2023. It was marketed in China as the MG Mulan Triumph Edition.[20] Exterior changes compared to the standard MG4 include a 18-inch alloy wheels, orange-painted XPower brake calipers, trim accents, and a Racing Green exterior paint option. The powertrain combines dual electric motors, 150 kW (201 hp; 204 PS) at the front and 170 kW (228 hp; 231 PS) at the rear– for a combined output of 320 kW (429 hp; 435 PS) and 600 N⋅m (61.2 kg⋅m; 443 lb⋅ft) of torque. It is equipped with Dynamic Cornering Control System that combines an electronic locking differential with torque vectoring. MG claimed a 0–100 km/h (0–62 mph) acceleration figure in 3.8 seconds. It also uses a modified chassis setup, by using a 25 percent stiffer suspension with recalibrated spring and dampers and stiffer anti-roll-bars, sharper steering, larger 345 mm (13.6 in) disc brakes, and a stronger setting for the regenerative braking.[21]

EX4
At the 2023 Goodwood Festival of Speed, MG revealed the EX4, a one-off tribute designed to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the MG Metro 6R4 rally car of the 1980's.[22] Based on the MG4 XPower and using the same 320kW dual electric motor powertrain as the XPower, the EX4 was designed in collaboration with high performance engineering company RML Group, featuring widened wheel arches, aero disc wheels, a front splitter and a large rear spoiler, much like the original 6R4.[23] The EX4 was driven by BTCC Champion Daniel Rowbottom in demonstration runs up the Goodwood hill-climb course.
