The Lebanon women's national basketball team represents Lebanon in international women's basketball tournaments and is governed by the Lebanese Basketball Federation.[2]
History
Gold Medals at Pan-Arab games and Arab Championships
Lebanon women's team achieved notable success in the 2003 Arab Women's Basketball Championship, securing the championship title.[3] Subsequently, they clinched consecutive gold medals at the 2004 Pan Arab Games basketball in Algeria and at the 2011 Pan-Arab Games in Qatar.[4]
Promotion to division A of FIBA Asia and the FIBA ban
Their journey included a promotion to Division A of the FIBA Women's Asia Cup after finishing as runners-up in Division B at the 2009 FIBA Asia Championship for Women.[5] Transitioning to Division A for the 2011 FIBA Asia Championship for Women, the team displayed their capabilities, securing the 5th position.[6] However, political disputes within domestic clubs led to a four-year suspension of the Lebanese Basketball Federation by FIBA in 2013.[7] This suspension prevented the women's team from participating in the Division A of the FIBA Women's Asia Cup, resulting in their return to Division B after the ban was lifted in 2014.[8]
Promotion back to division A of FIBA Asia (2020-present)
After a prolonged period, the Lebanon women's team successfully reclaimed their spot in Division A by clinching the top position in the 2021 FIBA Women's Asia Cup Division B.[9][10] Notably, in the 2023 FIBA Women's Asia Cup Division A, the team secured their Division A status by winning over Chinese Taipei in a crucial game with a final score of 75–73. This victory secured their place in the top tier for the upcoming 2025 FIBA Women's Asia Cup.[11]
