This number including 23 emigrants who died in other nations.[1] The oldest known British person ever is Charlotte Hughes, who died in 1993 at the age of 115 years and 228 days.[1] The oldest man ever from the United Kingdom is Henry Allingham, who died in 2009 at the age of 113 years and 42 days.[1] As of 13 January 2024, the oldest person living in the United Kingdom is Ethel Caterham, born 21 August 1909, aged 114 years, 145 days.[2]

Betsy Baker

Betsy Ann Baker (née Russell; born August 20, 1842 – October 24, 1955) was born in Great Brington, Northamptonshire in England, immigrated to the United States, settled in Nebraska, and became the world's oldest person.[32] She lived for 65 years in Johnson County, where she was called "the Queen mother of the Johnson County Fair" in 1953. At age 107, she received a congratulatory letter from president Harry S. Truman. On her 112th birthday, she was featured in the US Army magazine Stars and Stripes.[32] She died in Tecumseh, aged 113 years and 65 days.[32]

Baker was the first supercentenarian listed by Guinness World Records as the world's oldest person.[32] In 2002, researchers confirmed that she had been the world's oldest living person by modern verification standards.[32][33] Baker would hold the title of world's oldest living person from Nancy Merriman's death on 14 January 1954[34] until her own death in 1955. She was the second well-documented person in the world to have reached the age of 113, after Delina Filkins.[33]

Lucy Jane Askew

Lucy Jane Askew (8 September 1883 – 9 December 1997) was the oldest person in Europe at the time of her death, aged 114 years and 92 days. She was born in Loughton, Essex, to Arthur George Askew and Susan Elizabeth Askew née Ellis. Her parents were prosperous cartage contractors, cab proprietors, and landowners. She had five siblings, of whom three also lived past 100. Askew lived all her life in Loughton, and never married. She was a devout Christian, attending the Loughton Union Church. She moved into a nursing home at 106 and survived a leg operation at 108. She remained in good health and died peacefully in her sleep. She attributed her longevity to a modest lifestyle.[35][36]

Edith Ingamells

Edith 'Judy' Ingamells (née Gude; 12 January 1894 – 1 March 2006)[37] was the oldest person in the United Kingdom from December 2005 to March 2006.[38] She was born in Maidenhead, Berkshire, to George and Harriet Gude. According to census documents, George worked as a photographer in 1901 and a public caterer in 1911. She moved to Enfield, Middlesex, at the beginning of the First World War in 1914, and married Percy Ingamells, a wholesale florist.[39] They had three daughters, born between 1915 and 1925. Ingamells lived in other areas around England, and worked as a milliner before settling back in Enfield in 1990.

Her daughter, Patricia Bull, said, at the time of Ingemells' 111th birthday, that the secret of her longevity was to "never look back, always look forward, which she is certainly doing".[40]

Ethel Caterham

Ethel May Caterham (née Collins; born 21 August 1909) is the oldest living person in the United Kingdom and the last born in the 1900s decade. She is the last surviving subject of King Edward VII.[41]

She was born in Shipton Bellinger in 1909 and was raised in Tidworth. Her sister, Gladys Babilas (1897–2002), lived to 104.[41] She went on a voyage to British India in 1927 and worked as an au pair to a military family there until she was 21.[41][42] After returning to England, she married Norman Caterham, who would go on to serve in the Royal Army Pay Corps.[42] This saw the couple travel to several parts of the world, including Hong Kong, where Ethel set up a nursery to teach English, crafts and games. They also travelled to Gibraltar, where they started their family; they raised two daughters back in England. Norman died in 1976.[41]

Caterham has lived in Surrey for over 50 years and presently resides in a care home in Ash Vale. She drove until she was 97 and enjoyed playing contract bridge in her centenarian years.[42] She survived COVID-19 in 2020, aged 110,[41] and was visited by the Mayor of Surrey Heath on her 111th birthday in August. Shortly before her 111th birthday, she and her granddaughter were interviewed by BBC Radio Surrey, where she said her secret to her longevity was "taking everything in my stride, the highs and the lows."[43]

Caterham became the oldest living person in the United Kingdom upon the death of 112-year-old Mary "Mollie" Walker MBE on 22 January 2022. She turned 113 in August of that year, becoming the first person in Britain to do so since Olive Boar in 2017. On 7 October 2022, upon the death of 113-year-old Rose Eaton, Caterham became the last British person born before 1910. Since the death of Lucile Randon of France on 17 January 2023, she has been the second-oldest person in Europe, after Spain's Maria Branyas—the world's oldest living person. Caterham is, however, the oldest living European-born person, as Branyas was born in the United States.[41]
