Introduction

I had to make a separate guide for this particular MacBook Pro as it has the new Apple T2 Chip and requires a different procedure then the other Mac Laptops.

  1. mblLKRliQGoJW1PT
    • Choose Apple menu > Shut Down.

    • After your Mac shuts down, press and hold its power button for 10 seconds.

    • Release the power button, then wait a few seconds.

    • Press the power button again to turn on your Mac.

    • If these procedures do not fix the problem, move onto Step 2.

    • Choose Apple menu > Shut Down.

    • After your Mac shuts down, press and hold the left Shift key, the left Option key, and the left Control key for 7 seconds. Then keep holding those keys while you press and hold the power button for another 7 seconds.

    • Release all three keys and the power button, then wait a few seconds.

    • Press the power button again to turn on your Mac.

Not right shift key, left. Holding the right shift key in this scenario will result in your Mac just starting up when you press the power button with the other keys down.

Thank you!!!! Every place I looked told me to hold the right shift key but it only works with the left shift key. I was going crazy.

    Loren Brown -

Thanks a lot! It repaired my Macbook Pro 2018 right side USBs!

Your project is the best! Love you guys!

P.S: I used the right shift key.

    Vyacheslav A. -

Only left shift worked for me! Thanks!

    Aaron G -

    Merci beaucoup !

    Arnaud Meyer-Poujol -

I do not understand when you say, yes it works! What works? How do I know it won’t shut down again dropping from 45 % to 2% in a second? I have done what you said with both left and right shift key. The left key does not work…when I do use the right key and count 7 seconds and then with the power button with 7 secs, my mac air starts up after 5 seconds already…is that good. I have not dared to work further than 45 % anymore and plug int the charger again. I see the battery percentage is draining super fast and is slow in charging…like 3 hrs for a full 100%. So, I done what you said, should I risk working beyond 45% ? Every time it shuts down to 2 %, I have less battery time. This is my replacement battery from only 3 months ago. And it does have the same problem as the former battery….This is an urgent matter.

    Alann De Vuyst -

Its confusing how this works because on the 2018 model I have, the laptop turns on when ANY key is pressed. As soon as I hit Shift, Control, and Option the computer powers up automatically.

    • Shut down your Mac.

    • Then turn it on and immediately press and hold these four keys together: Option, Command, P, and R.

    • You can release the keys after about 20 seconds, during which your Mac might appear to restart.

    • You can release the keys after the Apple logo appears and disappears for the second time, or after 20 seconds. Whichever comes first.

I’am having the exact same problem and same device, same software.

MacBook is starting up exactly the same way as without holding these 4 buttons.

might the be an wiring issue?

dirt under trackpad, producing a permanent touch without movement, interrupting the keyboard inputs?

Macbook Pro 2018, 15” (I presuming no difference in operation).

After your Mac shuts down, press and hold the right Shift key, the left Option key, and the left Control key for 7 seconds. Then keep holding those keys while you press and hold the power button for another 7 seconds.

The Macbook fires up as soon as the touchbar power button is pressed. Depressing all ⇧⌃⌥⎋ together, or depressing ⇧⌃⌥ and then adding ⎋ makes no difference. Depressing! ,-)

got the same in MBP 2018 Touchbar!!!

Bart -

Nope. Doesn’t work on a 2018 MacBook Pro with Touchbar. Pressing any key boots up the computer and holding Command-Option-P-R doesn’t have any effect as it did on previous models.

Brian Tully -

Yep, new macbooks behave terribly on boot. It’s probably part of the problem. Did anyone ask for this “start on lid open” BS?

Richard Cook -

SOlution: do not press the right shift key!!!! Press all the keys on the left side of the keyboard including the Shift key- otherwise it will power on your MAc normally. IF you do the left side it wont power - do this for 10 sec then release and then power on normally- this will reset the SMC on touch bar MBP

This guide is correct. I’m not sure what you are all talking about. It’s the right shift key, left option and command. 7 seconds then add power for 7 seconds for SMC

NVRAM on 2018 DOES work, you will simply see a blank black screen, the display will shut off and then come on again. There’s no chime, but it does reset NVRAM

+1! I had the same problem where the computer would just boot up as normal on a 13” 2017 model, but this did it.

Calum Smith -

And if MBP doesn’t turn on!!??? It was slow to charge… the battery icon showed up in middle of screen when hitting any button with a red depleted battery symbol flashing even though it was plugged in. Did the SMC reset, will not turn on or respond at all. I don’t even get the dead battery icon anymore. Now what!?

Blythe Preston -

Anybody knows how to do that in a MacBook Pro 13inch MBP13,3. None of those works in it…

Thanks and Happy new year!!!

Can anyone tell me where the Power Button in Macbook Pro 2018 Touch Bar is?

Thu Mon Gia -

Hi, as said in the teardown of this machine : “The Touch ID sensor doubles as the power switch” this means it should be on the far right of the Touch Bar, unfortunately I don’t own on so that I can’t check for sure. Anyway, if it is only to start up the computer, you may refer to https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT201150 on how to start a Mac. Hopes this helps.

Cajuteq -

Here is the correct information for how to reset SMC.

It depends on T2 Security Chip/ T1 Security Chip on your Mac.

(You can check a security chip model by pressing “option key and apple logo icon on the left upper corner on the screen and click “System information” and click “controller”.)

For T2 Security Chip;

Control: on the left side of your keyboard

Option: on the left side of your keyboard

Shift: on the right side of your keyboard

For T1 Security Chip;

Control: on the left side of your keyboard

Option: on the left side of your keyboard

Shift: on the left side of your keyboard
