Introduction

The purpose of this guide is to show you how to clear the sunroof drains on a 2019 series Volkswagen Atlas. Occasionally, these drains become clogged with sand or mud and that can cause water to remain in the sunroof channels and will eventually drip into the cabin of the vehicle. This simple repair will prevent that from happening in the future.

Before beginning this guide, power off the ignition, place the car in park, and engage the parking brake.

    • There are two sunroof drains. One is located on each front corner of the sunroof.

    • To complete this repair, it will be easier to access the drains by holding down the windscreen (if equipped) with one hand while working with the other.

    • The location of the drain opening is shown in the red circle.

    • The sunroof drains run all the way down to the engine compartment. This is where liquid exits and drains out of the vehicle. You will probably use about 6 feet of wire or trimmer line to reach the end.

    • While holding down the windscreen with one hand, use the other hand to grip the trimmer line close to the end and locate the drain opening.

    • Begin feeding the trimmer line into the drain opening and continue pushing the line down the drain in short segments.

    • If the line stops feeding into the drain and you haven't used about 5-6 feet of line, give it a gentle push to attempt to get it to continue.

    • If the line will not go in any further after a gentle push, remove the line and continue to the next step.

    • To test the drain, pour a good amount of water into the drain and watch it move down the channel and into the drain opening.

    • To check that the blockage is cleared, look under the vehicle for water on the ground. The water should appear slightly behind and toward the interior of the front tire of the side you were working on.

    • If this was successful, repeat steps 3 through 5 on the other side of the vehicle.

    • If you cannot clear the drains this way, it is best to take the vehicle to a mechanic for the repair so as to not damage the vehicle.
